Queensland - Career Start (General Pathway)

The Career Start General Pathway Program provides individuals with the skills and support to start their career. The Program provides training to help individuals find a job and supports those already employed to move into more skilled roles or full-time employment. This program is for delivery of entry level training to students. This program is subsidised by the Department of Trade, Education and Training (DTET).

Eligibility

To be eligible for Career Start (General Pathway) funding, a student must meet the following criteria:

  • 15 years and older

  • Must no longer be at school

  • Be a permanent Queensland resident

  • Must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or an Australian permanent resident (including humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency.

  • Must not be currently enrolled in any qualification

  • Must not have previously completed a Certificate III or higher-level Qualification within the last 10 years apart from qualifications completed while at school.

There is a limitation of one funded qualification under the Career Start General pathway, a maximum of two government funded traineeships within a 10-year period, regardless of provider or industry and one subsidised introductory level skill set. Students must make an informed decision prior to enrolling into any funded qualification.

Concession Eligibility Criteria

Where concession is stated and waivers added, concessional evidence must be supplied at enrolment. Concessional status applies to students who can provide evidence that they:

  • Hold a Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card or a Veteran or Pensioner Concession Card

  • A dependant or spouse of a person who holds any of these cards and the prospective student is named on the card

  • Are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander (self-declaration)

  • Have a disability (self-declaration)

  • Are an adult prisoner.

Additional waivers may be applicable if the fees are likely to cause extreme financial hardship.

Queensland - Career Boost (General Pathway)

The Career Boost General Pathway Program provides eligible individuals with access to a subsidised training place in selected Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) levels Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma and up to two subsidised skill sets.

The program delivers training designed to help individuals develop higher-level skills necessary to secure employment, advance their careers, or progress to further education and training through university or tertiary education. Eligible participants are entitled to only one subsidised training place under Career Boost whether under the General or Traineeship Pathway. This program is subsidised by the Department of Trade, Education and Training (DTET).

Eligibility

To be eligible for Career Boost (General Pathway) funding, a student must meet the following criteria:

  • Aged 15 years or older

  • Not be a school student

  • Be a permanent Queensland resident

  • Be an Australian citizen, or Australian permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrant), or a temporary resident with the right visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency, or a New Zealand citizen

  • Not already have a Certificate IV or higher qualification (including tertiary qualification) completed within the last 10 years (qualifications completed as a school student and foundation skills do not count)

  • Not be enrolled in any other qualification, whether funded or unfunded, except for foundation skills

  • Students enrolling into MSL50122 Diploma of Laboratory Technology must hold the Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques

  • Students enrolling into MSL60122 Advanced Diploma of Laboratory Management must hold the Diploma of Laboratory Technology

The Career Start Traineeship Pathway Program provides a funding contribution towards the cost of training and assessment for eligible Queensland apprentices and trainees enrolling into entry level qualifications. The program provides training to help individuals who are employed to move into more skilled roles or full-time employment.

It also includes School-Based Apprentices/Trainees with an aim to gain future employment post-school. Under the Career Start Traineeship Pathway, a student may access up to two subsidised training places. This program is subsidised by the Department of Trade, Education and Training (DTET).

Eligibility

To be eligible for Career Start (Traineeship Pathway) funding, a student must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be currently employed as a Queensland apprentice or trainee under a registered training contract in an eligible qualification

  • Must not be currently enrolled in a Qualification

  • Must not be in school (excluding School Based Trainees)

  • Must not exceed a maximum of two government-funded apprenticeships/traineeships within a 10-year period including School Based Traineeships and Career Boost programs.

  • Funding is available for only one apprenticeship/traineeship at a time.

There is a limitation of two funded apprenticeships/traineeships across School-based, Career Start and Career Boost Programs, trainees must make an informed decision prior to enrolling into any funded qualification.

There are partial exemptions for certain groups, such as those under 17 who are not in school and have not completed Year 12 by February of the year they enrol. Additionally, there are further exemptions for Career Start Traineeship fees, resulting in zero fees for school-based trainees and those under the Work Skills Traineeship Program (SQW Trainee). For individuals under 21 or 25 years of age, a fee-free exemption is applicable; this exemption only applies to MSL3 level.

As part of the Career Start Traineeship Program it is a requirement that a student tuition/co-contribution fee be collected. The Career Ready VETiS Program is a key initiative under the Queensland Government's VET in Schools Investment Plan. It supports high school students in a nationally recognised qualification and to develop practical, job-ready skills to leave school feeling prepared and confident about their future. This program is funded by the Department of Trade, Education and Training (DTET). Eligible participants are entitled to only one VETiS funded qualification or one School Based Traineeship but not both.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Career Ready funding, a student must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be enrolled in Year 10, 11, or 12 in a Qld secondary school

  • Must not be an international secondary school exchange student

  • Must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or an Australian permanent resident (including humanitarian entrants), or temporary resident with the necessary visa on the pathway to permanent residency.

  • Must not be enrolled in a Qualification funded by DTET including a school-based traineeship

  • Must not have already completed a Certificate I or Certificate II VETiS qualification funded by DTET

  • Must have a genuine interest in pursuing a post-school vocational occupation.
